He will share how he uses exercise and education as means of mentorship and character development for his student-athletes at his alma mater.

Meet Steve Kiely, Strength Coach and Educator at BC High

Schimri Yoyo: Welcome back. This is Schimri Yoyo with Exercise.com and we’re continuing our series of interviews with fitness experts. Today, I have the good pleasure of introducing you to one of my good friends and former classmates, Steven Kiely, who is now the head strength coach at our alma mater, Boston College High School.

Steve, welcome.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, thanks Schimri. Thanks for having me. This is pretty cool. Us both being classmates and being able to talk about this and our experience at BC High. You’re a little bit of a legend over here. So, I’m excited to talk to you. Thanks for having me on.

Schimri Yoyo: No, it’s cool man. So, let’s just start off: give us the background of what sports you played growing up?

Steve Kiely: Sure. So, I started playing a whole host of sports growing up. Mostly it was basketball and football. When I was in high school and middle school, I was always getting injured. I was this really tall, thin, lanky, uncoordinated guy, so that kind of led me to my fitness journey and it was just working out and being in the weight room and training was just something that I love to do and I was just drawn to it. My friends and I—we loved training and we loved playing sports. It was a huge part of what we did.

As I continued on in high school, I never thought that health and fitness and even sports would be in my future. I always wanted to be a teacher and a coach, but I never thought that I’d be doing what I am now. When I went to college, I played football at Colby College, studied history, and followed the track to be a teacher. I graduated there in ’06 and taught and coached at a prep school in Connecticut.

And an opportunity came up at our alma mater here, BC High, in 2007 and I jumped at the chance to come back and teach middle school and to coach a few different sports. And after a few years of coaching and teaching, I made the leap into strength and conditioning. So now I am the head strength coach here. I’ve been that for about eight years. I still teach middle school, seventh- and eighth-grade social studies. And it’s a blessing, man. I love it.

Schimri Yoyo: Oh, that’s awesome. So would you say that, was it in college or what, did you see somebody in high school to think that coaching and health and fitness could be part of a career for you?

Steve Kiely: Well, it’s interesting. I never really thought it was going to be part of what I did. I always wanted to be a teacher and maybe a head football coach, but it really had to do with the mentors and influences I had while I was here and when I came back to teach. When I first came back to teach here at BC High one of my colleagues and mentors, Dr. Mark Stonkus, he ran a gym called MBX Training Mind and Body Cross Training.

He also ran a company called Clutch Athlete and he was just looking for coaches and he came to me and was like, “Hey, you’re good with the kids. You’re good with training. Why don’t you come down and be a strength coach?” And I was like, “I don’t really know what I’m doing. I know how to train myself, but I’ve never trained groups before.” And he was like, “We’re going to show you everything you need to know. We’ll help you grow and get certified and all those things.” So I did and it ended up just being something on the side for me during winters and summers with him.

And I joined a current colleague and coach, Matt McClune, and those two really guided me and helped me get my first certifications, pass the CSCS, which is the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and got my foot in the door and I loved it.

Schimri Yoyo: Oh, that’s awesome.

Steve Kiely: But still, it wasn’t really something that I thought I was going to do for the majority of my day until the opportunity came up here at BC High to help direct the program, the strength and conditioning program.

Schimri Yoyo: Now, that’s good. I mean it’s always good to have mentors. And you answered my next question. I remember Coach Stonkus because he was our freshman football coach.

Steve Kiely: Yeah.

Schimri Yoyo: He’s a great mentor and he’s always looked to invest in the players. So, that’s great that you guys were able to have that connection and he helped correct you even off the field and [point you] into the current path that you’re in now.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, I always wanted to emulate those really good teachers and coaches that I had whether it was in high school or college. I mean that’s what drove me to education in the first place. And having a community like BC High and people like that who work here in it to help guide me along the way was really special. So I continued working with him for a few years and then the opportunity here came up and I jumped at the chance.

Our athletic director who was another mentor of mine really put his faith in me to help run the program. And I did. [I also had] some other mentors along the way. When I was down in Connecticut, I met a guy named Mike Ranfone, and Mike became a really good friend of mine and a mentor of mine over the years. And when I got the job here, he really gave me specific things that I should do, you know, “Take this seminar with me down here, come down, read this, read that, follow these people.” And he was really good about not letting me get overwhelmed with the responsibilities or with the job at hand. So he was really good.

But essentially I look at mentorship all over the place. We have amazing hall of fame coaches here and great teachers that I just watch and take notes. There are some great people here that I always can learn things from. And, I’m also part of the NSCA and the NHSSCA, which is the National High School Strength and Conditioning Association. And those two groups are really more of a digital community for me where I can share things and hear stories and have mentors there that I don’t even see. So I’ve been blessed to be a part of a community that’s been really supportive and has guided me along the way.

Schimri Yoyo: Yeah, you have a great lineage both in your training and your schooling. I know that was one of the things I always appreciated at BC High, too, just the lineage, the great coaches, and athletes, and mentors from there. And it seems like you’ve picked that up too with the National High School Strength and Conditioning Association.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, our weight room is the Trapilo weight room donated by Steve Trapilo, who was an alum. Donated the entire weight room no charge. He never took a penny from coaching football and he was my football coach and he passed a few years ago. But I just try to do the best I can to help out and still give that name some pride around here.

Schimri Yoyo: It’s a great legacy, a great legacy to be a part of. And so now when you’re not teaching and coaching, what are some of the things that you like to do for fun?

Steve Kiely: Yeah. I’m a middle school teacher and a coach so that doesn’t leave me a ton of time for fun. But when I’m not coaching them, I’m either grading papers or hanging out with my five-year-old daughter who is amazing. And that gives me tons of joy. But as of now, I work with my wife; my wife’s defending her dissertation in about a week or so and she’s a Ph.D. researcher in the health and wellness space. We try our best to help out family and friends in making good lifestyle changes. So, we’re working on that. But, in the meantime, I just relax with my family. That’s what I like to do for fun and relax[ation].

Schimri Yoyo: Listen, nothing wrong with that. That’s great. Being a family man, truly a man for others. That’s great.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, that’s right.

Schimri Yoyo: Now, let’s get a little bit into your philosophy and methodology of training. If you had to describe your philosophy in one word, what one word would best describe your philosophy of training?

Steve Kiely: How about two words?

Schimri Yoyo: Yeah, that’s fine.

Steve Kiely: Alright. We use what’s called the BC philosophy over here at BC High. The B standing for basics in mastering the basics and the C standing for consistency. And that consistency is creating a system that is consistent and unified, but also consistent language across the coaches. Consistent expectations across seasons. This keeps it simple. We are, like I said, a unified program where we have a general athletic development program. We don’t get too complex or too fancy with what we do. Our programming is very simple and we just want to master the basics and be consistent in doing so.

When we look at what we’re doing in terms of programming, really it stems down to three goals for us. One is to build a foundation of athleticism. Two is to help sports teams create culture, a winning culture. And three is to prepare these kids for their life. Whether that’s a college sport or let’s say some type of competition they’re getting into or whether that’s just generally being healthy.

We have the responsibility with this strength and conditioning program to address all the student needs at the school in terms of their strength and conditioning and speed and fitness needs. So, that’s essentially our philosophy and the essential goals that we have.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s great. And then you actually mentioned it leading to my next question. You mentioned about creating a culture. How important or what role does the strength coach play in high school athletics in determining the overall culture of the athletic program?

Steve Kiely: Yeah, I mean, it can play an essential role. I was just mentioning the other day that our weight room is what I feel is the heartbeat of our whole athletic center down here. That’s where leaders are groomed. That’s where camaraderie is built. That’s where some of this grit and resiliency come into play. And the majority of these athletes spend their time in there. More time in there than they do during their sport, during their season. So it’s a really important place for especially an athletic program as competitive as ours to be.

I’ll give you an example the other day, we have 20, 25 lacrosse players in right now training as a team because they want to win another state championship. And they know that being here with each other being coached by us and being around the maroon and gold that they’re going to be in a better chance to do that. Compared to some teams or athletes that may not take advantage of what we offer here.

So essentially building culture and being a part of the successes of a sports team. I consider myself an assistant coach on every single sports team and I consider every single sports coach an assistant in our program. We’re woven together to try to see and build what’s best for our student-athletes.

Schimri Yoyo: What’s the relationship or the nature between the strength and conditioning injury prevention and also the rehabilitation and recovery?

Steve Kiely: It’s all linked together and this is why we try to keep it simple because injury prevention or reduction, speed, strength conditioning, building muscle—these things are all connected and they’re all important when it comes to developing an athlete either in season or offseason.

So the way we organize our program is that movement quality is the most important priority that we have, [so] we need to teach technique. We need to teach the fundamentals. It’s part of the reason why we mastered the basics.

We spend a lot of time sprinting, jumping, throwing, squatting, hinging, pushing and pulling, working on stabilizing our core, building our hamstrings and our posterior chain, and doing the things that are pretty simple. They’re not easy, but they’re simple.

To be more resilient to injury and to get better as an athlete. Essentially, I mentioned that we have a unified program and on that unified program we have an approach with how we organize our training sessions. We use what’s called the ARMAST approach. The ‘A’ stands for achieve. What specifically are we trying to achieve today in today’s training session.

And I have to really survey the crowd and understand how they’re feeling and what are appropriate goals going into that training session. The warm-up, we follow a ramp protocol which is: we raise the core temperature, we activate and mobilize, and then we potentiate. So, we try to cover all the bases in the warmup. Then, we go into some type of explosive block where we’re doing our sprinting, our jumping, our throwing.

And then we go into the main lift which is essentially strength work, our heavier strength work. And our auxiliary work, which may be something super light or it may be something that we push a little bit to build some muscle. Then we finish off the session with something that’s more seasonal specific. So maybe that’s some conditioning, maybe it’s some recovery work, maybe that’s us just breathing and trying to get ourselves right.

And then we always end with some type of educational component. Why we do what we do. And we try to make that very clear to the athletes. This is why we took the time to cool down. This is why you need to warm up before you train. This is why sprinting and working on speed all year is important. So all these things are important and I think the best method to reduce the likelihood of injury or mitigate injury is just smart progressive training where you build and yet more difficult as you go along.

But essentially starting light and it’s better to go too easy than in too light and too heavy and too hard. [If] someone can’t do something, then we’ll find a modification or a substitution and work on why they can’t do it. And oftentimes, people get hurt. Either the athlete is letting their ego get in the way or the coach is putting their ego into place and trying to use fitness as more of like a punishment or to prove something that they want to prove with their ego.

So injury prevention and keeping these kids healthy and strong and building that foundation—that’s our number one priority.

Schimri Yoyo: That makes sense. And it seems like it’s like continual education and constant progression in that process so thanks for that elaboration. Now, we sometimes hear about athletes, especially in the high school and sometimes college ranks, having serious heat-related illnesses and issues. What are some things that coaches and athletes can do to prevent this from happening?

Steve Kiely: Yeah. Like I said it goes back to smart training and really being thoughtful about any type of load or stressor that you put on the student-athletes. I think it was Mike Boyle who said, “Think like a lawyer.” You have to be able to justify why you’re doing anything. And I think like a teacher also. Like, it wouldn’t make much sense if I put a summer reading test the first day back from summer break. The kids aren’t ready for it. They wouldn’t do very well and it wouldn’t make much sense.

But gradually easing into it and then providing something more challenging is definitely the way to go. And I think that by being thoughtful and intentional about what you’re doing, the intensity and the load that you’re providing, I think that can avoid some of those things.

I also think that—but let’s say something does happen. Our school prepares us really well for those types of situations. We have an athletic training staff that’s superb and we do our best to avoid those types of things. In our training, we don’t do a ton of hard, heavy conditioning where we’re outside in the heat. I have no problem saying, “Hey, it’s a hundred degrees in Boston in July. Let’s just stay inside today. Let’s instead push some sleds or let’s just recover.”

So, I try to avoid those situations at all costs. I’m pretty conservative with conditioning and going too hard. I would always like training to be a value add instead of something that completely depletes these students. I mean we’ve got to remember these are high school kids. They got a million different stressors going on and different things in their life, which we have to be aware of and that we need to be mindful of.

Engaging Student-Athletes as an Educator

Schimri Yoyo: Well, thanks for that insight, Steve. And a couple more questions before I let you go. I know you’re on your break and you got to prepare for some of the classes and sessions moving on forward. But you know, can you just walk us through the typical day for you as an educator and athletic trainer? You know, let’s just say from the first period until your last training session with the athletes.

Steve Kiely: Sure. Now a typical training, a typical day for me: I try to get in here around 7:30, 7:45 and at that time our morning groups are pretty much finishing up. So I have a few coaches that do an amazing job. I check in with them, make sure I see how things go. Then, I’m teaching four or five classes a day, whether it’s middle school, geography or civics, or a PE class. But that keeps me busy from about 8:20 until about 2:40 and then at 3:00 or after school, strength and conditioning program starts.

Now one of the biggest challenges we’ve had is trying to figure out how to schedule so many teams. I mean, you remember Schimri, there’s just so many teams and so many kids. We’re a school of 1300 all boys and everybody wants to train. So the biggest challenge for us is creating a fair and equitable schedule for all teams to utilize the program.

And in doing so we’ve created staggered times. So, for example, I may have an in-season group at three o’clock which I bring through a warmup. They’ll do their blocks of training that may cut short about 30 to 40 minutes. At the same time, I am training an in-season group, my assistant Coach McClune is running an offseason training session in the adjacent gymnasium. So, by the time he’s done with the longer speed session that they have, the in-season group that I have is out.

When he goes in I go back out and I get another in-season team that I warm up and take through a workout. So then we’re shifting and making sure that there’s enough space in there, it’s safe, it’s not overwhelmed with the numbers, and we program accordingly. So each training day there may be only one exercise where you need a rack.

The other exercises may just be dumbbell or body weight. We may get out in the gym, so grab a dumbbell, go out in the gym. But that’ll go until about 4:45, five o’clock and then typically that’s time where some others that may not be part of a team or a group can come in and pick our brain a little bit, ask us to look at their form or help them achieve their goals. So, that’s typically three to six o’clock throughout the school year. That’s how it’s organized. You know I’m also here during the summer, we have a really popular summer program here. So, my coaches and I are here three days a week running that. But now essentially that’s a typical day.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s a pretty, pretty full load. I like how you’ve been planning the schedule and structure with the weight room because I remember those locker rooms could get pretty congested.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, and Schimri, it’s tough. We’re a commuter school as well, as you know. I mean we have a four o’clock for a weight train that probably half of our student-athletes if they’re not doing a sport, they have to make that train. And I don’t want to have a kid workout or train somewhere else. I’d rather them work out here. So we really had to be creative with creating a structure where kids can be consistent and they can train here and be comfortable and be able to get the coaching that they need.

Schimri Yoyo: And now two more questions before I let you go. One is how are you guys utilizing technology and social media to engage your student-athletes?

Steve Kiely: Yeah. So with technology, I mean on the day to day level, we use certain things within our workouts. So for example, we use timers. We’ve started doing a lot more timing of tens and flying tens this year and keeping track of that data. I’ve always been an Excel guy, but right now we’re starting to look into other methods of technology to house all of our data. And I’m trying to be really thoughtful of that.

How do we do that without slowing things down, without really affecting what we do? But we’re experimenting with a few things now but I’ve always been an Excel person, keeping track of data in Excel. But that’s definitely room for growth for us. We’re looking into some things right now. Oh and social media. I started about a year or two ago posting a lot of BC High strength on Instagram and just trying to showcase what our athletes can do and what they’re doing in the weight room and try to give them some love out there.

Schimri Yoyo: No, that’s pretty good. I mean I’m sure. Yeah getting engagement and I’m sure they’re really excited and want to get the shout outs from their friends from what they’re seeing on Instagram.

Steve Kiely: Yeah, a lot of, a lot of fist bumps and arm flexes on there.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s right. And the more you keep them engaged the more, like you said, they’ll want to keep training at school and not look also at a train. So that’s pretty cool.

Steve Kiely: The key is we want to use technology, social media, as a motivator, not a distraction. And as a teacher, you know these kids are on their iPads all day. It’s really difficult to find that balance. So it’s always something that you can reevaluate.

Schimri Yoyo: No, that makes a lot of sense. Motivation, not a distraction. That’s pretty great. I’m going to put that on a t-shirt. No. But lastly, Steve, what are some resources whether books, magazines, podcasts that you would recommend for those who are interested in sports performance training?

Steve Kiely: Yeah. I mean for resources, I defer. I find a lot of helpful things through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National High School Strength and Conditioning Association. If there are high school strength coaches out there that aren’t a member of those organizations they should get on it. There’s just so much helpful stuff and it’s not just sets and reps, it’s more about logistics.

Like we talked about today’s scheduling, we talked about things that someone who’s not maybe in a high school setting would even have to think about. So those are the two really good resources for me. In terms of podcasts, I love the Strength Coach Podcast. I love the Big Time Strength Podcast and you know, I like things that you guys do at Exercise.com. You guys highlight some really, really smart fitness professionals in the field that I can always learn from.

Meet Mike D’Andrea, Founder of T3Performance

Schimri Yoyo: Welcome back. This is Schimri Yoyo with Exercise.com and we are continuing our series of interviews with fitness experts. Today we have Mike D’Andrea of T3 Performance in Ohio. Mike, thanks for joining us.

Mike D’Andrea: Absolutely. Thanks for having me.

Schimri Yoyo: Alright, let’s jump right into it. Mike, what were some of the sports that you played growing up?

Mike D’Andrea: So, I was big into basketball, track and field. I did shot put and discus, and then football, of course. So, those are the three big ones for me.

Schimri Yoyo: Is that how you developed your passion for health and fitness? While playing athletics growing up?

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah. I remember from the time I was five or six, I always wanted to play in college, or the pros. And so, I was always out there, working on my jump shot, trying to get that better. And then, as soon as I hit, I think it was 11 or 12, I started doing push-ups and sit-ups and then found a gym near me, and once I started that, I was hooked.

Schimri Yoyo: And I know that you were fortunate to attend THE Ohio State University. Who was your favorite Buckeye growing up?

Mike D’Andrea: So, probably because I played the same position, I’d have to say Katzenmoyer. Andy Katzenmoyer. He was a freak of nature, just what he could do physically. And it was pretty cool, once I got down there, and was playing down there a couple of summers, he was there helping out at the facility so I got to meet him, and even years after he was done playing, he was still a physical freak so, good guy.

Schimri Yoyo: Big Kat. I remember. I grew up in the Boston area and I remember the Patriots drafted him, but his career was cut short due to injury. But I remember just seeing him around one of the training camps and saying, “He’s different.”

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah. He was a big boy and really fast.

Schimri Yoyo: And while you were playing, who were some of your favorite coaches and teammates— I mean, obviously, you don’t want to leave anyone out—but is there anyone that really impacted you as far as your career while you were there on the playing field?

Mike D’Andrea: As far as coaches, obviously [Jim] Tressel. I always tell people, what you see on TV is really who he is, 24 hours a day. He wants to make better people first, and then better players. I think he’s still doing that. He is president at Youngstown State now, and he is just doing that in a different way. He was a phenomenal coach, and one of those life-changing coaches.

I’d say same with Luke Fickell. He was my linebacker’s coach, then he became a D Coordinator for the last couple of years. He just had a great way with connecting with players, and showing them where they needed to improve, or where they were already doing okay. And, just a really good motivator too. [Editor’s Note: Coach Luke Fickell is now the head coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats.]

Schimri Yoyo: I know you guys train lots of different athletes at your . gym, different sports, but do you have a favorite that you like to train for, or help people to train and get ready?

Mike D’Andrea: Well, it’s funny now. It’s kind of timely because he tore up last night, but we trained Raheem Mostert last offseason and I think he—whatever, rushed for 200 yards (Actually, it was 220 yards and four touchdowns). It’s not like it was all us, but we’ll take a little credit. I personally love training track athletes. I did some track growing up and I loved the idea of just that incremental improvement. You are able to go out every single time. Whereas football and basketball, it can kind of be not as objective as track and field, right. There’s a lot of other intangibles that go into those sports. So, I personally love track, but we train athletes of all sports.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s what’s up. And so, when you’re not training, what are some of the things that you do for fun outside of your profession?

Mike D’Andrea: I’m fortunately in a position where I really don’t do much training anymore. We have a phenomenal staff of 20 to 25 coaches, and I do a lot more of the business stuff, but when I’m not working, I’m a pretty boring guy. I’m typically reading, or hanging out with the kids, and they’re five years old. I have twin boys now, so they’re just getting to the age now where I can start kind of getting introduced to stuff. So, that’s what usually keeps me busy.

Schimri Yoyo: Oh, yeah, that’s exciting enough. Fatherhood is a great profession. Great endeavor. I have a six-year-old, a five-year-old and a three-year-old at home.

Mike D’Andrea: Oh, man. Awesome.

Schimri Yoyo: Yeah, so that’s why—

Mike D’Andrea: Boys, girls, or—

Schimri Yoyo: Boy, girl, boy.

Mike D’Andrea: Okay.

Schimri Yoyo: And, they’re starting to get into sports. My oldest, he’s really into basketball and football right now. So, he always asks me to stay up late to watch the Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football games.

Mike D’Andrea: That’s awesome.

Schimri Yoyo: So, I let him get to halftime.

Mike D’Andrea: Oh, yeah?

Schimri Yoyo: That’s the compromise his mother (my wife) and I made.

Mike D’Andrea: Nice.

Building a Foundation: Starting with Simplicity

Schimri Yoyo: Now, when you’re thinking about your training philosophy and methodology, what one word would best describe your training philosophy?

Mike D’Andrea: Training philosophy, I would say simplicity. It’s funny: When you first start out—and whether you’re an athlete or coach—when you first start out down this path, everything is being thrown at you and you’re trying to simplify things and it’s like you just do what you know at the beginning. And then as you learn more you try to add on to it, and it gets more and more complex and then it gets to a point where you realize it doesn’t need to be that complex and you try to simplify it down.

And I think that’s where we’re at. We can still get into the nitty-gritty with a lot of our elite athletes and stuff. When I was first getting started, one of the things we did well as a company, we traveled around the country, visited Mike Boyle’s place and talked to his business guy. And I was actually just down in Florida visiting EXOS a couple of weeks ago and everywhere you go it’s like the 80/20 Rule. Twenty percent of what our athletes do is what really moves the needle as far as their athleticism and mobility and all that. So simplicity for sure.

Schimri Yoyo: Well, that’s awesome. And I guess following up with that, what would you say is the greatest lesson that you’ve learned so far? Both in business and fitness that you can pass on?

Mike D’Andrea: I would say just the ability to be open and, I guess, dynamic and I kind of look at those as really the same thing. Whether you’re dealing with an athlete on the floor or you’re doing dealing with a parent or you’re dealing with a business opportunity or situation, having multiple options available to you.

So being kind of dynamic and looking at different options as they come at you. I think it just opens up the possibilities of what you can do and you’re not limited in such a way. And really with dealing with parents, everyone’s a little bit different [about] what they want for their kids. So just having a lot of tools at your disposal.

Schimri Yoyo: That makes a lot of sense. How do you address nutrition with some of the athletes that you train?

Mike D’Andrea: I send them to a nutritionist. A lot of our coaches have a good base knowledge. Again, it doesn’t have to be that complex, especially when you’re dealing with a young kid. But we do have a nutritionist on staff, so we give them some general guidelines. But for the most part, we’ll go talk to the nutritionist.

Schimri Yoyo: Okay. So it’s part of the team’s [responsibility]—that you don’t directly deal with it, but you have that as part of your team, kind of outsourcing it.

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah.

Schimri Yoyo: Okay. That makes sense. What do you say is the biggest difference that you’ve seen with your staff training amateur athletes versus training professional athletes?

Mike D’Andrea: So I think it’s just a matter of—we have this pyramid that we go off of. If you could imagine that the foundation is stability and then you have mobility and then strength, power, and skill. So the skill would be like swinging a bat or throwing a ball. And when an athlete first starts out, a lot of them, they just want to get right into the swinging a bat or throwing a baseball or throwing a football.

And we would tell them: “If you improve your stability and increase your mobility and then your strength, you’re going to be able to throw that football further.” When a kid, amateur first starts out with us, it’s more about building the foundation and then working up to where we can get really hyper specialized.

That’s why I think it’s always interesting and funny that a lot of places talk about sports-specific training. And when you’re talking about a 12- or 13-year-old, for the most part, it doesn’t matter if it’s a volleyball player or basketball player, they both need to jump high. They both need to run fast linearly or multi-directionally. It’s the human body.

It’s really not until I get up into high school and college and pros that you’re [able to] like really specialize in kind of what Cressey does for his baseball guys down there in Florida. So that’s the biggest difference kind of, we have a way to progress our athletes and then once they hit a certain level, we can really get hyper-focused.

Schimri Yoyo: What would you say is the relationship between the strength and conditioning, the injury prevention, and then also recovery and rehabilitation?

Mike D’Andrea: So it’s definitely all one spectrum. That’s kind of how we look at it. We have a great relationship with University Hospitals Sports Medicine. They’re the Browns’ provider up here and a couple of other pro sports. We have very similar philosophies in the idea that once someone’s done with rehab, we are going to communicate with that athletic trainer and get them right into our training program, train them to hopefully prevent future injuries. But if they do, then they go back to the sports medicine doc.

And there’s kind of like that seamless transition from one stage to the next. But as far as trying to prevent injury, I think it goes back to that pyramid we were talking about. Just like young kids want to focus on throwing a football or shooting three-pointers all day when they really should be working on getting stronger or faster.

We get a lot of high school kids that want to come in and max out on bench and squat and deadlift and all the meathead stuff we all used to do back in the day, but now we’re a little bit smarter with it. So we kind of have to slow them down and show them this is why we do this little stuff that you really don’t think is doing a lot, but it’s doing a ton in regards to injury prevention because we always say we’ve got to keep our athletes healthy first and then we’re going to improve performance because if they aren’t able to play, then it doesn’t matter how fast you can run.

Schimri Yoyo: It makes a lot of sense. Now in keeping with the element of keeping them healthy and measuring progress. How do you – what’s one of the things that you guys do to measure progress or measure success with your athletes besides keeping them healthy?

Mike D’Andrea: So, obviously there is the objective numbers that you can get right from a training program. How much has their squat improved? How much is their 20-yard or vertical jump or broad jump? We measure all that stuff. So we use this technology Vici and it tracks all of our workout training programs and then testing numbers and all that kind of stuff. So that’s kind of easy enough. So we track, are their numbers improving across the board? Are they remaining healthy, are they consistent with their workouts? And then the fourth piece of that for us that we’re just getting into now is we train so many athletes that we kind of feel like we want to take the next step with them.

So more than just make them a better athlete. How do we make them a better person? So we have been working on rolling out like what we call virtue training. How to build more courage in young athletes. How to help them become more honest and hardworking individuals. So we are just kind of scratching the surface on that, but I really think there’s something there and I think it goes hand in hand with sports and performance training.

We are actually working with someone that implements that kind of globally with a lot of different companies in different areas. And he’s kind of been instrumental in helping us try to get that initiative off the ground.

Schimri Yoyo: Well, that’s pretty unique. That’s awesome. Building out a comprehensive athlete and not just the physical aspect. That’s pretty cool.

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah. Urban Meyer talks about his most important coach was his strength coach, right? Cause that’s the guy that’s with the athletes three to four times a week all year round. If you think about it, it makes sense. We’re with the 12- or 13-year-old or 14- or whatever two to four days a week, all year round, or maybe nine months out of the year, cause they’ll take a season off sometimes.

We have a whole lot of time to do a lot of good and really help them become better people ultimately. So not that I’m trying to like get on my high horse, but I think we have touched so many people that I think it’s important that we start at least exploring that avenue.

Schimri Yoyo: I mean that makes sense. Now, what would you say is the biggest misconception about the sports performance training industry?

Mike D’Andrea: Amazingly, you still have parents and even some coaches that come in and it’s really two things. It’s one, my kid’s 12 or 13 or 14 I think they’re too young to be doing anything with strength training. So there’s that continual education or reeducation process with them. Fortunately, you have groups, I mean all of these sport’s medicine groups are starting to get into our world. The performance training world.

We were talking to a group down in Tennessee that’s doing it, University Hospitals up here is looking to get into it. So you would think if you have these super high up sports medicine docs that understand that it’s okay for a 12-year-old to do strength training, parents would start to get that and most have, but you still run into that. And I think speed [is also a misconception].

So a lot of athletes and parents will say, “I want to get faster,” and I always tell them one of the quickest ways to get faster is just to get stronger. You get stronger, you’re going to have more force output and it all kind of works out. So those are the two biggest areas in which we still try to educate people.

Combining Collaboration and Expertise in Business

Schimri Yoyo: That’s good. You have to fight the misconceptions with more education. So now just jumping into just some of your personal and professional experience from the business side. What are some things that you do to manage your time between being the coach but also being the entrepreneur?

Mike D’Andrea: I [visited] a lot of facilities when we first got started and we still do that every year. I was fortunate enough to have a lot of good mentors around me, business guys that I trained in the area that gave me some really good advice early on; so I was able to kind of step away a little bit from the coaching on the floor, even though I loved it, even though it was what I had done my whole life, and really step back more and focus on the business itself.

I mostly just do the business stuff today, which is probably good anyway cause we have a lot more coaches on staff that are way smarter than me when it comes to the training stuff. Nowadays, I just try to become a better leader for our people and look for other business opportunities.

I think we’re doing some pretty cool stuff and we’ve had some people in the past two to three weeks kind of reach out for either franchising or doing other [things] on locations. That is kind of what I focused on there. And then I’ve been kind of obsessed the past year or two on reading leadership books and just trying to be better for our people.

Schimri Yoyo: So you were able to delegate some of the coaching duties so that you can focus more on your leadership and entrepreneur duty. That’s pretty wise.

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah. Well, when we started, it was just me and one of the coaches, Eric, my buddy from high school. We’ve grown now, we have around 25 performance coaches and other 20 sports skill coaches. So, it’s been cool to see. I’ve had to remove myself from the floor and then we’ve had a couple of other coaches also do the same thing. They’re in more management type positions now. It’s been a really good learning experience and fortunately, I’ve had a lot of good mentors around me to give me some solid advice over the years.

Schimri Yoyo: That leads me to the next question. We just want to give you an opportunity to brag about your staff a little bit and tell our audience what makes you guys at T3Performance unique. What’s that unique flavor that you guys are bringing to the table?

Mike D’Andrea: I think again, our staff is 20 to 25 deep and all Exercise Science, Kinesiology, CSCS training certified. We have a Barbell Club. I would honestly put our staff, not only the numbers but the expertise, up against anyone in the country. And I mean, they’re just phenomenal. The number of athletes we train – we’re training over 2,000 individual athletes every single week. Some of that’s like team speed work, but then some of that’s like actual individuals and we are able to deliver individual programs through that Vici software I was talking about.

I think we’re doing some really cool stuff. And the cool thing is it’s like a flywheel at this point where we have all these athletes we’re training. We have, with these coaches, we have a good internship pipeline. And the more athletes we train, the more we learn about the effectiveness of our different training modalities. You combine that with what we are doing with University Hospitals and I think it’s a pretty lethal combination. And the idea that it’s the full spectrum like I mentioned earlier. So, we still have a lot more room to grow and get deeper on how we can perfect our programs. But I think we’ve got a pretty good flywheel in motion.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s good. What have you learned about entrepreneurship that you wish you would’ve known when you first started?

Mike D’Andrea: I’ve learned that there is still a lot to learn, but I’d say, it’s really tough at the beginning. When you first start, you’re just trying to survive every single day and I see it, and I have talked to a lot of young coaches in the area and outside of the area. If you can break away for even 20 to 30 minutes a day when you’re first getting started and take time to reflect–which I really didn’t do until kind of more recently.

Reflect on what’s working and what’s not working, but then take time to plan for the next week or month. Like I said, when we first started, it was just about training athletes, trying to get more athletes in the gym, training athletes, get more athletes in the gym, [etc.], and just thinking more about your systems and how you want to operate in six months or a year.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s good. Just a few more questions. Thanks again, Mike, for your time. It’s been really good. I just wanted to ask you about—you mentioned the technology, the Vici software a couple of times, but what other technologies or what are some ways that you’re using technology and social media to promote your business?

Mike D’Andrea: So technology-wise we have electronic timing systems for our athletes. We have the vertical jump mat, we’re looking at getting a force plate, all different ways in which we can objectively measure our athletes’ progress. With that Vici software, we can maintain communication with our athletes. So that’s good to send them articles and tips and all that kind of stuff.

As far as social media, that’s definitely one area where we can improve. We do some stuff on Instagram and Facebook, but we want to get better at it like being able to come up with more educational type material. Whether that’s through LinkedIn or TikTok, Snapchat or whatever. I don’t really do much social media, but I know it’s important to do it.

Schimri Yoyo: You’re right. There’s a new one that seemingly comes up every month or so. But I mean that’s always something that we can all get better at and another place where you can delegate: hire a director of social media.

Mike D’Andrea: Fortunately, my wife is an eighth-grade teacher, so she’s like up to date on all that stuff.

Schimri Yoyo: Well, that’s great. keep it within the family. Right. She gives you the trade secrets you need.

Mike D’Andrea: Yeah. Like, “Hey idiot, you should be getting on this platform and doing so and so.”

Schimri Yoyo:  Alright, Mike. Lastly, what are some resources, books, magazines, podcasts that you have found helpful for yourself or that you would recommend to our audience?

Mike D’Andrea: As I mentioned earlier, I love reading, love learning, and we have a lot of learners on our staff as well. A lot of our coaches, we kind of have, we actually just got a couple of bookshelves for the office. So there’s a lot but I’ll just list a couple. Blue Ocean Strategy, phenomenal book. High Output Management, [helpful] in managing people as you grow. The Hard Thing About Hard Things, Atomic Habits, Mind is the Master and The Power of Moments.

Schimri Yoyo: That’s definitely a good start. Those are some powerful titles. So that will keep our audience busy for the next…

Mike D’Andrea: And they kind of hit on different aspects. Like one is strategy, one is management, and so you are all over.

Tax Tips for Trainers

Navigating tax season as a personal trainer

January 31, 2020

If you manage a fitness business or have employees that work under you, tackling tax season first requires that you get any forms to your employees prior to the end of January. This means that 1099 forms for contractors and W2 forms for employees must be postmarked by January 31st. While your employees may not receive the forms by that date, it is crucial that they leave your office and are in the mail by the 31st.

Deductions

How do you handle taxes if you’re a self-employed personal trainer or gym owner? How do you “reap” the rewards, so to speak? You take advantage of deductions. As a business owner or self-employed trainer, you have a lot to work with in terms of tax write-offs. Here’s a great resource from NFPT that dives into what deductions are and who can take advantage of them.

Tax Tip #1 – Keep records. If you did not keep records of your business expenses in 2019, learn from this lesson and start compiling all 2020 receipts and expenses in an Excel sheet so that the following tax season is easier to navigate.

Tax Tip #2 – Did you just start your fitness business? Good news – you can get a tax break for that. Start-up costs like marketing and advertising, website design, and realtor fees can be deducted. Other deductions for fitness businesses of any age include travel costs (Did you visit clients in their homes?), health insurance premiums (Did you pay for private health insurance?), miscellaneous business expenses (Did you buy a printer for your business last year? Did you pay any state business license fees?), continuing education (Did you add another certification notch to your belt in 2019?), and fitness equipment (Did you add a few medicine balls to the gym?).

Tax Tip #3 – See if your fitness business is eligible for the new Qualified Business Income Deduction. If you’re a corporation, you do not qualify. Tax Tip #4 – While you may be tempted to go at it alone, unless you made the career switch from being a CPA to a personal trainer, it’s best to leave your finances in the hands of a tax professional. Here’s how to apply some of the top business trends of 2020 to your fitness business

The #MeToo movement is still in the spotlight in 2020 – and it’s up to businesses to take action. According to the organization Equal Rights, there was an “80% increase in the number of sexual harassment bills introduced in states across the country” last year.

What does this mean for fitness businesses? A study conducted by fitness equipment review site, Fit Rated, found that an unsettling number of gym-goers, particularly women, have faced some form of sexual harassment at the gym – with 70% of women who “reported changing their gym routine due to a negative experience at the gym.”

What can be done? Prioritize the safety of not only your members but your employees as well. For gym members, every reported incident should be taken seriously and a no-tolerance, gym-wide harassment policy should be in place. For fitness business employees, equal pay strategies and offering various benefits like maternity leave should be explored. A sexual harassment policy should also be created. This policy should then be used for regular staff meetings to refresh employee knowledge on how to train members appropriately and how to address any issues of harassment that may arise.

Going Green

In a survey of 30,000 Americans conducted by the Physical Activity Council, Millennials and Gen Z are the most active generations with 60% of Millennials and 70% of Gen Z reporting engagement in some kind of “high-calorie activity” like bodyweight exercise, HIIT, cross-training, boxing, and/or treadmill running. In addition to making fitness a priority, Millennials and Gen Z prioritize “going green.” A 2019 Gallup poll found that “67% of people aged 18 to 29 and 49% of those aged 30 to 49 say global warming is real, man-made, and a serious threat.” Gallup also found that these generations “search for meaning from their work and purpose in their patronage” more so than any other age group.

What does this mean for fitness businesses? Millennials are willing to pay more for sustainability. Some gyms have already used this knowledge to their advantage. Not convinced? Even Forbes highlights the importance of businesses’ role in social change.

What can be done? Think about ways that your fitness business can “go green.” Encourage recycling, go paperless, and cease selling plastic water bottles. The American Council on Exercise lists a few additional ways you can make your fitness business eco-friendly.

Jay Morgan founded Dynamic Health and Fitness in 2001 and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer. Originally a student-athlete at Morgan’s company, Nick Leader currently serves as the Director of CoachFit, the above-mentioned app created in collaboration with GoMotive.

The CoachFit app aims to make it easier to deliver workouts, communicate with clients, and track workouts. While GoMotive may have delivered on portions of these aspirations, they fail to hit a larger portion of the fitness industry market.

This app is designed mainly for personal trainers, and the features reflect that. This is not a software that is usable for anything more than a small boutique gym and, even then, it has some limitations.

We will move into greater detail later, but the CoachFit app essentially allows only for scheduling in the personal training and group workout realms. There is no way to track membership, sell individuals products, or account for other services a gym or health club might offer.

GoMotive does offer a custom-branded app to personal trainers or boutique owners, however, there are some restrictions. Once again, we will touch on those details later in this article.

GoMotive vs Exercise.com

The most prominent difference between GoMotive and Exercise.com’s software is the ability to encompass the needs of any type of fitness business. As previously stated, GoMotive apps are designed for trainers and coaches who work with clients one-on-one or in small groups. Exercise.com can accommodate those needs as well, but they can also handle everything a full-size gym would require.

Due to the fact that GoMotive is marketing to a specific demographic, they need to make sure that they completely cover all the needs of that demographic. According to one user, the company has failed to do this:

“I need a video chat feature through the app, as well as the ability for client to upload video to me, not just receive from me. I can’t afford the private labeling, but would truly appreciate the ability to communicate fully through the app without outside email.”

Exercise.com provides calendars for whatever platform your fitness business needs. The software accommodates multiple trainers, multiple class studios, and can be easily sorted for customers to view. They can make appointments and pay for services they’ve booked, all within the software.

Accepting Payments Securely and Easily

GoMotive does not provide information on how it accepts payments, only that the app has the capability to accept payments for personal and small group training. Exercise.com, on the other hand, wants to make sure it can accept payment for any product or service and do so in a secure manner.

Using Stripe, our software can accept one time payments for products or services, send recurring monthly membership invoices, sell packages for personal training or group classes, or combine all accrued payables into one monthly bill for customers. It can truly be customized to whatever will work most efficiently for your business.

Increase Business Efficiency With Easy Report Access

When owning a fitness business, you want to make sure the services you offer and the associated price tags are making your business profitable. With Exercise.com’s software, you can generate reports to see anything from total purchases to gross revenue. Having this information at your fingertips can help you decide whether your business is on the right track, or if you need to make changes going forward.

For example, you might want to analyze your small group training schedule. After generating a report, you notice more revenue coming from morning and evening classes than lunchtime.
